Redesign and continuing Art-Direction of widespread bilingual architecture magazine DETAIL
With the January/February 2018 issue, Detail has a new face. strobo B M has been commissioned to work on a new layout concept to take the magazine’s stringent design to the next level. This design update was developed and implemented with three core aspects in mind: readability, the consistent bilingualism of German/English from cover to cover and the integration of additional content from other media – be it online, in book form or from congresses and other activities.
Visual Communication for Kunsthalle Bielefeld since 2012.
Kunsthalle Bielefeld was built by architect Philipp Johnson, who realized the Kunsthalle as his only museum building in Europe in 1968. Since September 2012 strobo BM is in charge of the all over communication of Kunsthalle Bielefeld. The commission includes basic graphic needs in daily working routines up to to the conception and design of the exhibition campaigns.
Along this process strobo BM has refined an existing visual identity by Thomas Mayfried and Swantje Grundler, who developed a typographic framework and the institutions logo corresponding to the floor plan layout of Philipp Johnson.
A journey through the printed matter archive of Konstantin Grcic and his exhibition at Kunsthalle Bielefeld
On the occasion of the exhibition “Abbildungen” at Kunsthalle Bielefeld, which was on display in spring 2016, our catalogue conception turns its gaze on the media framing of Konstantin Grcic’s design objects. First researched in early magazines, company prospectuses, flyers and other print media, the selected pieces are presented as reproductions of reproductions.
Abbildungen/Figures is neither a survey nor a retrospective, but an overview of Grcic’s work. The publication is accompanied by an in-depth analysis by Robin Schuldenfrei, Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, who, in presenting Konstantin Grcic’s oeuvre to the German-speaking world, examines it from a historical perspective for the first time.

Architectural monographs on
Herzog & de Meuron
and David Chipperfield (tbc)
We have developed a design concept for an architectural monograph series, whose contents are always compiled on the basis of the archive material from the Detail publishing house. To start with, the monograph on Herzog & de Meuron has been published in August 2017. Further monographs, whose design strobo B M is responsible for in 2018, will be published about David Chipperfield Architects (Spring 2018) and Renzo Piano (Winter 2018).
Detail publishing house scoured his archives and uncovered more than 25 publications facing Herzog & de Meuron since 2000, including reports, interviews, technical contributions and several project files. The monograph delves behind the scenes and describes processes, all while highlighting one thing: plenty of construction details.
The design of the book pays particular attention to the different forms of representation based on heterogeneous material that comes from the archive. Drawings appear surrounded by generous
white space, while on the other side images as cluster-carpets closely meet.
